New baler improves safety and efficiency at waste cooperative supported by BVRio

As part of its efforts to strengthen inclusive waste recovery solutions in Brazil, BVRio is supporting cooperatives with targeted infrastructure improvements and training. One such initiative is the installation of a new vertical baler at Coopama, a waste cooperative supported by BVRio through the ‘Cooperate to Recycle’ project, with funding from Petrobras’ socio-environmental programme.

Located in Rio de Janeiro, Coopama plays an important role in inclusive recycling in the metropolitan region. The new equipment is essential for compacting materials such as cardboard, PET bottles and plastic film, an upgrade that improves operational efficiency, bale quality, and, most importantly, safer working conditions for cooperative members.

Pedro Succar, BVRio circular economy specialist, and project manager, explained: “This type of equipment directly enhances the social additionality of recycling initiatives. It improves working conditions, reduces physical strain, and promotes safer, more dignified labour for waste workers. This is what an inclusive circular economy means in practice.”

Following the installation, technical training was carried out with selected cooperative members. The session, led by the equipment manufacturer’s representative, focused on safe operation, maintenance routines and proper material handling.

Carlos Nascimento, a waste picker and Coopama’s member for six years, participated in the training: “Seeing this machine being installed with care and then working perfectly fills us with pride. It’s a real improvement in our daily work. We’ve already baled cardboard, PET and plastic film, and everyone liked it.”

The new vertical baler also includes advanced safety mechanisms, helping prevent accidents and supporting a culture of care and professionalism within the cooperative. It is one of several improvements delivered by the project, which combines infrastructure upgrades, ongoing training and income generation strategies to strengthen the role of waste pickers in Brazil’s circular economy.
